Knights were professional warriors. Each Lord would give some of his land and manor houses to his knights to support their families. The various meanings proved whether he was a member of an important and powerful family. The arms became more hereditary from the end of the 12th century and they became more defined as they passed down through the same family. In the early days, they were usually single with strong columns and a variety of animals, both real and mythical. The meanings represent certain things about the Knight and are explained later.

As more and more people displayed coats of arms, they gradually became more complicated, especially when the Knight married and merged their respective coats of arms with the family of the lady they married. Each still retained its own unique meanings.
